Colonoscopy Screening Time- What You Don’t Know

There are many people who want to know how to schedule the colonoscopy screening and how long it takes. This timeframe is not only important for patients but for caregivers too who come to an appointment for colonoscopy.

Usually, colonoscopy takes 30-60 minutes, based on whether you have to remove polyps or take biopsies. However, it is necessary for patients and caretakers to expect to stay for a total of 2 to 3 hours in the hospital or endoscopy center.

If you are waiting in the waiting room or you are giving a call to your office staff during the planning and reconstruction of the colonoscopy when it is time to take the patient. Patients will have to relax to get back home the rest of the day those working are expected to take the day off.

What occurs when a colonoscopy takes place?

The patient changes into a gown around 30-60 minutes before colonoscopy and a nurse begins an IV. The doctor or nurse will examine the incidents and any potential complications during the operation.

Then, light sedation is typically given to the patient through the pill or IV. The patient would possibly not recall the colonoscopy itself due to the sedation.

When the colonoscopy screening is finished the patient takes about 30-60 minutes before he gets dressed and leaves the building to recover from the sedation. The doctor shall examine what he or she has found in colonoscopy as a last step before leaving, and discuss further steps if any exist.

The doctor will then be sent back to laboratory to assess if they are benign, precancerous, and cancerous whether the polyps or tissue (biopsies) have been removed. In cases in which a polyp or development is too large for colonoscopy, the doctor will advise you to see a specialist or surgeon. In such cases, a low-residual diet may be recommended by the doctor for some time.

Since the sedation residual effects can last up to a day, the patients are not allowed to drive home on their own and should not take important decisions unless the effects are completely worn out. The patient can feel bloated and pass gas the rest of the day after colonoscopy, while clearing colon air.

How long would it take for a colonoscopy?

  • 30-60 minutes before the operation to brace the patient

  • Colonoscopy itself for 30-60 minutes

  • 30-60 minutes to heal immediately following treatment in the hospital or endoscopy center

  • The majority of the day to rest at home and heal
