A Detailed Preparation Guide for Colonoscopy

Cancer is increasingly becoming one of the common death reasons across the globe. Among the other forms, colon cancer is the one that remains untreated. One of the most effective diagnosis processes is colonoscopy screening. Colonoscopy is one of the effective cancer diagnosis methods, where a sleek tube is inserted for scanning the colon. However, preparation is necessary beforehand.

Planning for your preparation

Before going for the colonoscopy, make sure you discuss the procedure with your doctor. They are experts and can guide you the right way to prepare for the process. During scheduling the process, the diagnostic center will provide you with a set of instructions.

Do not forget to read them carefully before visiting the lab for the procedure. If you have any queries regarding it, make sure to call your doctor and do the necessary counseling.

Also, do not forget to clear the schedule a day before and on the day of the procedure. Ask your friend or any of your relatives to come with you to the laboratory. You will need a few key supplies like low-fiber food, moist wipes, broths, or sports drinks for colonoscopy screening.

Make some changes in your diet

Cleansing your process is imperative before you are going for a colonoscopy. Therefore, you have to indulge in eating simple foods at least for three to four days before the process. Include low-fiber foods like pasta, rice, chicken, eggs, cooked vegetables without skin, and more. Similarly, the foods that you must strictly avoid include nuts, popcorn, fatty foods, raw vegetables, whole grain, and red meat.

On top of that, do not consume any food supplements or vitamins. If you are on any medication, ask your doctor when you should stop and start taking them. Avoid consuming blood-thinning or anti-inflammatory drugs before the process.

Fast before the D-day

Fasting is compulsory a day before the colonoscopy, which means you cannot eat any solid food. Thus, you have to consume clear liquids like soups, clear broth, and more. Alternatively, you can drink any sports drink or apple juice. Tea and coffee are okay to consume but avoid adding cream. Consume ice pops or ice cream; however, avoid colored ice creams.

The reason behind this is colored food items will lead to colon discoloration. Subsequently, the doctor will not get a clear picture. Also, say no to alcohol or other related drinks before and immediately after a colonoscopy.

Do not forget the purge

Finally, the night before the colonoscopy process, you have to consume strong laxatives, which help clear the digestive tract. You have to drink around half-gallon of any liquid laxative in the evening, and four hours before colonoscopy you have to drink the rest.

Once the laxative starts working, you will face frequent diarrhea, cramps, and even bloating. Since it is a continuous process, make sure to wear a diaper and carry a few to the lab.
